Monthly Meetings

Monthly Meetings are held in the afternoons of the third Tuesday in each month at 2.00pm (except for the months of June, July and August) in St Paul's Parish Rooms, Reading Road, Wokingham with an invited speaker covering a wide variety of subjects.

The group leaders of the various activity groups are usually present and would be only too pleased to talk to you. If anyone wishes to start a new interest group and has sufficient support the committee are keen to extend even more the variety of interest groups.

"Life in the House of Lords"

Pauline began her verbatim reporting career as a freelance Court Reporter in London and went on to work at the World Bank and the Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg. For many years she worked in the House of Lords as a Hansard Reporter.
Tickets costing £2.00p per person (which includes a glass of wine or fruit juice)may be obtained from John Saunders ( 0118 989 3076 ) throughout June and August and from Sylvia Mason from the 2nd week in July onwards, by sending a cheque made payable to Wokingham U3A and enclosing a Stamped addressed Envelope for the ticket return.

Numbers are strictly limited with no admittance at the door without a ticket.

September 21st “Army Presentation Team “
The Army Presentation team routinely give presentations to a wide variety of audiences. It is not to recruit but it is intended to inform the public on what the Army is doing, who the people are who make up its fabric, about training and selection and its accountability to the tax payer and to those who serve in it.
October 19th. Georgina Dodd. "Food and the brain":
Can blueberries improve our memory? She will talk about her current research which is looking at the acute effects of blueberries on executive function and memory in younger and older adults. .
November 16th. Colin Read BA FIBMS “A humorous look at 19th. Century medicine” He is a medical Scientist who has a special interest in antique medical, pharmaceutical and dental antiques

Tuesday 18th January David Nobbs "History of RSPB"
Our very own U3A member presents this fully illustrated talk, complete with birdsong and some historical film clips.   He takes a look at the history of the RSPB from its formation as the “Fur and Feather Club” at the end of the 19th century to its current status as Europe’s largest wildlife conservation group.
During the 120 years that The RSPB has been in existence there have been many significant changes in our countryside and in the wildlife that it supports. This talk will cover how The RSPB has responded to those changes with initiatives that cover everything from giving us tips on making our gardens wildlife friendly and supporting farmers with agricultural incentive schemes right through to saving the Sumatran rain-forest. The RSPB thinks that nature is truly amazing and it aims to keep it that way so that we can all continue to enjoy it.

Tuesday 15th February Sally Botwright "London Oddities Part 1"
Sally is a Blue Badge Tourist Guide who qualified in 2001 and is well experienced in taking people on interesting and informative tours around London and in presenting colourful and entertaining talks on a variety of aspects of our capital city.
As she spends so much time in
London and enjoys looking at details she realised that there are many things that hardly ever get noticed and decided to bring them together into an illustrated talk.
Prepare to be surprised in discovering oddities of a place you thought you knew so well.
